One of the reasons we love this area is its proximity to the vineyards of the Helderberg, and Stellenbosch. In 15 minutes we can been in the vineyards, which not only make very good wine, but also have great restaurants, surrounded by flowers, blue sky, and mountains. Vergelen and Lourensford date back to 1700 as farms, although the vineyards themselves are only 20 years old. Vergelen has a lovely old mansion, and camphor trees, which are 300 years old. That’s where we love to picnic, and check out the views.
Lourensford also has a lovely garden, with a coffee roasting shop, a cheese shop, and a chocolate maker. So, on Saturday morning we find ourselves there to do some shopping.
At Ernie Els’ place (apparently the well-known golfer, for those who follow sports) there is a beautiful entry, with massive rocks, but the wine is too expensive!
However, Thelema we love the wine, especially one called ‘The Mint; which has a taste of mint, because of the eucalyptus trees that grow around.
And Kleine Zalze, with its restaurant that was voted 3rd best in South Africa.
