27 janvier - Une journee dans le centre de Sydney. A day in the centre of Sydney

On a décidé de passer une journée dans le centre de Sydney, voir l’exposition de photos d’Annie Liebovitz (qui était superbe).

We decided to leave Manly to spend the day in Sydney, starting with an exhibition by Annie Liebovitz, which was great.

En arrivant, on passe devant la dernière  Tour Martello, érigée sur l’île de Fort Denison en 1850. (A l’origine, elles étaient  construites par les Britanniques en Angleterre contre une invasion de Napoléon, et  après partout dans l’Empire Britannique.)

Arriving at Circular Quay, you pass the last Martello Tower built by the British, on the island of Fort Denison in 1850. They were originally built in England as fortifications against a possible invasion by Napoleon, and were then constructed all over the Empire.

L’art n’est pas uniquement dans les musées – il se trouve aussi dans les rues.

The art isn’t all in the galleries – some is in the streets.

Et des musiciens – le deuxième joue un ‘didgeridoo’, un instrument aborigène, mais il nous a promis de la musique didgeridoo ‘funky.’

As are musicians – the second is playing a didgeridoo, an Aboriginal instrument - although he promised ‘funky’ didgeridoo music!

Autour du Havre de Sydney se trouve des édifices restaurées, comme ces logements sur Walsh Bay, au pied du Pont de Sydney.

Around the Harbour are restored buildings, like these apartments at Walsh Bay, at the foot of the Harbour Bridge.

Et la maison la plus ancienne de Sydney, construite en 1815 (notre maison à Carlux date de 1782 !)

Et pourquoi pas, comme il est si beau, l’Opera House encore une fois. Même l’enfant de 4 ans qui était en face de nous dans le ferry, a dit ‘Wow’ quand il l’a vu.

And why not, another view of the Opera House, since it’s so beautiful. Even the 4 year-old opposite us exclaimed ‘Wow’ when he saw it.

Un très bon resto Thaï – cher, mais bon, avec des cocktails magnifiques.

Le Havre de Sydney. Sydney Harbour

Notre appart à Manly est entre les plages de Manly et de Freshwater, et sur le havre de Sydney.  Donc, pour aller dans le centre ville, on prend le ferry – souvent jaune et vert.  Et chaque fois on voit le ‘Opera House.’

Our apartment at Manly is between the Manly and Freshwater Beaches, and on Sydney Harbour.  So every time we go into the city we have to take one of the traditional green and yellow ferries.  And each time we see the Opera House!

21 janvier Une journée à Mittagong: A day in Mittagong

On a commencé avec un ‘pub lunch’ – déjeuner au pub, dans un beau jardin.   

We decided to visit some friends south of Sydney, near Mittagong, beginning with a pub lunch, note 'Pigs fly' beer.

Puis une promenade près des chutes de Finlay, avec des termites, et encore un serpent !  

Then a walk by Finlay Falls, a termite mound, and yet another snake!

Enfin,  l’apéro.  Une bonne journée.Finally l’apéro  - French cocktail hour.

17 janvier - retour à Sydney. 17 January, back to Sydney

On avait pensé à retourner à Sydney en voiture, mais les routes étaient coupées a cause des inondations, donc l‘avion oblige.  Retour au soleil, aux plages – pour le moment.

We had planned to drive back to Sydney, but with road closures after the floods, we gave in and flew back. Back to sun and beaches – at least for now.

14 janvier - une promenade à Alstonville. 14 January : a walk in Alstonvile

Pendant nos derniers jours à Alstonville, quand il on avait moins de pluie, on a découvert des parcs et des promenades dans ce ‘lotissement.’ Et des boites aux lettres pas du tout françaises!
The last few days at Alstonville we had better weather, and discovered interesting parks and pathways in this modern subdivision.  Also some interesting letterboxes.

Encore des inondations - still more floods

Des semaines de pluies violentes ont gonflé les cours des rivières dans le Queensland un peu au nord, souvent à des niveaux historiques, inondant une région aussi grande que la France et l'Allemagne réunies. La pluie continue, et hier Toowoomba, à l’ouest de Brisbane a souffert un ‘tsunami d’intérieure’ avec un mur d’eau de 2 mètres. Evidemment, plusieurs personnes mortes, et beaucoup disparues pour le moment.

A Brisbane, ils attendent aussi des inondations – le barrage qui donne de l’eau à la ville est normalement à 60% de capacité – aujourd’hui à 150%, donc il faut ouvrir le barrage, ce qui ajoute encore de l’eau. Et avec la marrée haute qui arrive…

On est un peu au sud, à Alstonville, près de Ballina ici, au bas de la carte. Ici il parlent des rivières qui vont déborder, mais pas du tout comme au Queensland. Mais il y a des routes fermees - normalement on part dimanche matin. Qui sait?

Weeks of rain here have covered an area the size of France and Germany combined with water. A few days ago someone in Rockhampton, one of the worst affected areas, said that the amount of water passing by each day was the equivalent of twice the amount in Sydney Harbour. Don’t know how much that is, but obviously a lot.

And then yesterday what they call an ‘interior tsunami’ hit Toowoomba, with a wall of water 2 metres high – now 8 confirmed dead, and at least 45 missing.

In Brisbane they are awaiting floods, and the dam that provides drinking water for the city has gone from ‘normal’ level of 60% capacity, to 150%. And high tide is this afternoon…

We are somewhat south of all this, at Alstonville, near Ballina here, where we are getting tired of watching the rain fall, but so far we are fine. There are predictions of rivers overflowing, but nothing like in Queensland. But roads are closed, and we are hoping that we will be able to leave on Sunday.

Apres plusieurs jours sous la pluie, on a décidé de sortir voir un peu plus de Ballina, la ‘ville’ prés de chez nous. La ville est située au nord de l'embouchure de la rivière Richmond. Pas encore en crue, mais évidemment il y a beaucoup d’eau ! Mais, la plupart de temps on était au sec!

After several days of rain, we decided to get out, and visit more of Ballina, the town near us. Ballina is situated at the mouth of the Richmond River –not yet flooded, but obviously lots of water. But most of the time we were dry.
