Lots has happened since we got home 27th February.
First, the garden, which grew a lot while we were away (unlike
North America, a mild winter, with lots of rain). The azalea is in flower, as well as the
hellebores, hyacinths, violets… So Harry
has spent hours in the garden, assisted by Daniel and Gaetan doing the heavy
pruning of bushes and trees. (No photos
of them, as it rained most of the time they were working)
Pour ma part, je m’occupais
de la cuisine. On avait décidé l’année dernière,
Meanwhile, I was working in the kitchen. We decided last year that it was time to re-do
the kitchen, and got most things decided before we left. Since the tiler was coming to lay our new
floor on March 3rd, we had arranged for the plumber, the electrician,
and the plasterer to come in before. Not
everything was done, but enough so that I could paint the kitchen before the
tiler came.
Avant – fin october 2013.
‘Before’ late October 2013
Et pendant. And during.
March 3rd, at 8.20, there was the tiler. He worked hard, and
now we have a new floor, a lot lighter, and more attractive than the old one.
Préparation - poncage et traitement. Preparation - grinding down the old tile, and treating it,
Luckily we have a small kitchen (where we spent most of the
first 10 years, while renting the larger part of the house.) It works fairly well, but not the most
comfortable place.
Malheureusement,
pour la cuisine, if faut attendre. On a choisi
Unfortunately, for the kitchen, we’ll have to wait. We chose Atelier Bretel, Father and Son –
carpenters/cabinet makers. They were in
the middle of constructing the kitchen, Pierre (father) smashed his foot. So now it’s all down to Xavier (son) to do
everything, and we’ll have to wait another two weeks.
After several days of rain, finally the sun came out, and we had lunch outside.
As the weather was good, the ferronier came to install the
handrail alongside our new steps up to the pool. (Ferronier is hard to translate into English –
either ‘ironworker’, or more appropriately for Jean-Francois, ‘craftsman in
wrought iron.’ He has done several gates
for us, and a staircase to our upper garden.
All are magnificent.)
bon.
After all this work, we spent Friday in Brive la Gaillarde,
the town about 45 minutes away from us. Appointment
with my allergist in the morning, and then lunch at La Table d’Olivier, a very
good restaurant that’s only been open about 2 ½ years, but has just received
its first Michelin star. (I didn’t take any photos – it’s a tiny restaurant,
and it seemed rather impolite to take photos.
But it was extremely good.
