Le 16 septembre, Carennac et sa fresque. Et son cloitre. Carennac and the fresco. And the cloister.

After 24 years in France, I’m still surprised, even amazed, at the art and history that is everywhere.  So, last Sunday, during the Journees du Patrimoine (Heritage days) we went to Carennac, to see a fresco in a private house, that is open only once a year.  Since Carennac itself is a beautiful village, it was worth the drive - perhaps not in a convertible when it was 32 degrees, but still….

The fresco, from the 15th century, ‘Three dead and three alive.’ This photo from the internet, as photos on site forbidden.

Dates from 1486, Found in 1977 under a thick coat of plaster. The theme of 3 cadavers meeting 3 young men was quite common at the time!  https://www.ladepeche.fr/article/2013/09/14/1708910-carennac-une-journee-pour-voir-la-fresque-medievale.html

We went to Carennac on our first trip to the south-west, in 1987.  Having been to a number of other villages, Autoire, Loubressac, Padirac, we were very tired, and when we arrived, Harry asked if I thought we should stop.  ‘No, it’s too late – oh well, I guess so.’  Right decision, especially for the cloister

The amazing Christ put into the Tomb, also from the 15th century
