Au nord - Wellington - to the North

Our stay in Nelson, at the top of the South Island was not what we expected – Harry caught a very nasty cold, and so for much of our time there we stayed close to home. Since the weather was very good, and the house lovely, it wasn’t such an ordeal to stay home reading and enjoying the sun. Every now and then Harry would get up, we’d go out for a short while, and then home to bed again.

Then on 26 November we left Nelson to go up to the North Island. The ferry across the Queen Charlotte Sound was spectacular with more amazing views.

We decided to spend the weekend in Wellington, the small city which is the capital of New Zealand. Luckily one can walk everywhere, and so we did, through the botanical gardens, down the cable car, and then to Te Papa, the Museum of New Zealand – a magnificent building. We particularly enjoyed the wonderful Maori pieces, learning a little more about history here. Plus the sight of so many locals enjoying the harbour.

As always, we’re interested in wine, and so were off to Cloudy Bay, in Marlborough, east of Nelson, makers of perhaps the best Sauvignon Blanc in the world. We tasted some, and didn’t disagree. Then home by Lake Rotoiti, where we found a black swan.

Nouvelle Zelande (Aotearoa) New Zealand: Nelson, 14-26 novembre

We’ve reached New Zealand, where we will spend almost two weeks in our first house exchange, a lovely house with a wonderful view over Tasman Bay. Abel Tasman discovered New Zealand and Tasmania in 1642. The houses climb up from the bay – the hill is even steeper than where we live. Note the French flag, to welcome us.

We haven’t done too much yet – mostly recovering from the long flights to get here, and also from the difficult time we had in Canada, with the death of Harry’s mother.

And of course we checked out the plants – orchids, and even a cannonball tree

Le Tour du Monde - Around the World - Hawaii

We began our trip around the world with a week in Canada, and then continued on to Hawaii. Our friends live on Oahu, but not Honolulu or Waikiki, thankfully. They are in Kailua, a calmer ‘cooler’ place. We spent the time walking on the beach, seeing some of the island.
