Réfection de Toiture - 'The Great Roof Project'

We have, in front of our house, a real ‘fournil’ or bake house, with a wood oven. But after almost 20 years of construction and gardening, it was full of scraps of wood, debris, and garden tools. (We don’t have a basement or a garage, and so it’s the only storage area.) We hadn’t even seen the oven itself for many years.

We realised that the roof was in bad shape, and really needed replacing. The structure was quite rotten, the roof beam itself was broken, tiles kept slipping off, and rain had been getting in for a long time.

So, we agreed to have the work done – and then waited, and waited. After two years, they finally started. By now a bigger job than we had imagined. We hadn’t realised who much masonry would be necessary to prepare the walls for the new roof. And while they were here, eaves troughs (guttering) to be replaced on the house - get as much done as possible before they leave!

Here are the 'before' pictures.

Finally construction starts – the old tiles come off quickly, with the help of a good team, and of the ‘Manitou’ French designed machine. For the first time) but not the last we see someone working from the ‘mouth’ or the shovel of the Manitou.

We see that the beams really are in bad shape. But at the end of the day we have a great view of the chateau through the open space.

The new roof beams, made in the workshop, arrive, and are quickly installed, thanks, to the Manitou. By the end of the day, the bake house is covered, and ‘to bed’ for the weekend.

Work – and disruption everywhere. Christian, the boss, directs, Arnaud rebuilds the walls, getting them ready for the new roof. He and Daniel have already made two lovely rows of ‘génoises’ decorative stonework, made from lauzes, broad pieces of stone which would have formed the orginal roof.

Guy installs the eaves troughs (guttering) in front of the house, their young helper checks out the trench dug to take electric cable out to the bake house, and why not, Gaétan does a bit of tree pruning!

10 novembre

Work on the roof beams continues. Check out the chunks of cement on the edge of the wall – which will all have to come off, and the wall rebuilt
The fireplace has suffered from years of dampness.

11 novembre
Arnaud works all day rebuilding the sides of the wall, even on this statutory holiday!

12 novembre

Already time to install the tiles. Even on the middle of the roof Christian is on-call. Great beams inside, installed in the traditional manner.

13 novembre

Everyone at work, laying roof tiles, redoing the chimney. The round structure in front is the oven itself. The roof is lauzes - slabs of stone.

End of part 1, and less activity this week. A little cleanup and we can finally see the roof.

25 novembre

And it starts again. With this new roof, the walls should also be beautiful, and so off with the cement and other nasty stuff people have added to the walls over the years. Re-pointing begins with chipping this out.

Pointing is done. Just a little more finishing inside, but the project is finally just about over.

Meme les portes sont belles! Even the doors are beautiful now!
