Réfection de Toiture - 'The Great Roof Project'

On a devant la maison un vrai ‘fournil’ avec four à pain – mais après presque 20 an de travaux et de jardinage, il était bourré de déchets, d’outils, etc. On n’a même pas vu le four depuis des lustres.

Et on s’est bien rendu compte que la charpente était complètement pourrie. Le faitage était cassé, les tuiles glissaient en peu plus chaque année, l’humidité était bien entré dans le bâtiment.

Donc, on a décide de refaire la toiture. On a fait faire un devis – et on attendait …. Après deux ans, c’est l’heure!

Mais c’est beaucoup plus de ce qu’on avait imaginé. Beaucoup de maçonnerie pour préparer les murs, nouvelles gouttières pour la maison - une fois les ouvriers venus, il faut en profiter.

We have, in front of our house, a real ‘fournil’ or bake house, with a wood oven. But after almost 20 years of construction and gardening, it was full of scraps of wood, debris, and garden tools. (We don’t have a basement or a garage, and so it’s the only storage area.) We hadn’t even seen the oven itself for many years.

We realised that the roof was in bad shape, and really needed replacing. The structure was quite rotten, the roof beam itself was broken, tiles kept slipping off, and rain had been getting in for a long time.

So, we agreed to have the work done – and then waited, and waited. After two years, they finally started. By now a bigger job than we had imagined. We hadn’t realised who much masonry would be necessary to prepare the walls for the new roof. And while they were here, eaves troughs (guttering) to be replaced on the house - get as much done as possible before they leave!
