And in the village next to the lake, the market, women washing their laundry in the river, and Harry – going native.

Lake Inle, approximately 13 miles long and 7 miles wide, but only 2 metres deep.  Houses are on stilts, the fishermen beat the water to drive the fish into their nets, and the rowers use one leg.

But there is also daily life in Bagan – the market, the pony carts, and children playing in front of their house, between rows of plums drying.

Bagan has over 4,000 temples, dating from 1057 into the 13th century.  Here are a few.

Yandabo – village des potiers.  Pottery village

We stopped at Yandabo, a village where they make pots, sold all over Burma.  The pots are completely handmade: the clay comes from the river, women make the shapes by hand, or by using a foot powered potter’s wheel, and then they are fired under several layers of burning straw, rather than in a kiln.  The Industrial Revolution hasn’t arrived in much of Burma.

20-22 février Croisière sur l’Irrawaddy – Cruise on the Irrawaddy

From Mandalay to Bagan we spent several days on a river boat – with 14 French people from our part of France, plus 25 others.  It was really magic, seeing the little boats on the river, the villages on the banks, and of course sunrise and sunset.

Then to Mandalay, where we visited the temple of Mingun by boat - we had to cross all these to get to ours.

At Yangon we began our tour of Buddhist sites with Schwedagon Pagoda, the first of many temples, pagodas, statues of Buddha.  The peak is covered in gold leaf.

La Birmanie (Myanmar)– 11 février au 1 mars. Burma

Donc, on pense à préparer un blog uniquement for ça.

After our stay in Australia, we went on to Burma (Myanmar), where we took LOTS of photos.  We’re thinking of consolidating them into another blog, but while we’re preparing that, here’s a sample.

First of all though, why did we choose Burma?  Because it’s a place we’ve always wanted to visit, and because people told us it was ‘Asia as it used to be.’  The country has many problems, with a military junta in power since 1962.  Europe and North America have applied economic sanctions, and for a long time ‘The Lady’ Aung San Suu Kyi, the leader of the opposition, requested that people not visit the country.  But recently there has been a growing belief that for things to change, the country should be less isolated – and that tourists should consider coming.

In Perth we stayed with friends, who showed us a little of the city, including the Botanical garden, and the Swan River - and who prepared a real Ozzie barbecue for us – we were only 6.  Needless to say, we didn’t eat it all!

8 février. Tree top walk, Walpole

Magnifique.

The Valley of the Giants, at the southwest tip of Australia – where you walk among the treetops (karri and tingle) – up to 40 metres high.  Harry wanted to do this for a long time, and it was really worth the trip.  Despite the rain, something we’ll never forget.  Quite magnificent.
